CAC Committee Report

By Shafat Qazi, SEAOC Computer Applications Committee

I recently received an award from SEAOC Board for my accomplishments with the web site and the Online newsletter. I would like to pass this credit along to the people who really deserve it. Dennis McCroskey and the rest of the SEAOC and SEAOSC Computer Applications Committee have actively contributed to its success. Many members keep the list server alive and they all deserve credit. Dennis Wish has produced much of the Online newsletter. He deserves all the credit for it, and I personally salute him for his time and effort. Dennis Wish is also a major driving force on our list server and devotes a lot of time to keeping the interest of the subscribers up. Thank you Dennis and others who make me look good.

Maps of known active fault near-source zones in California and adjacent portion of nevada TM

Accurately determine the distance of a given building site relative to known active fault near-source zones in California and the Nevada border using these new active source fault maps, developed specifically for use with the 1997 UBC. This map book contains over 200 detailed maps in an 11" by 17" format, at a scale of 1:150,000. The street and highway background make locating building sites easy and the type of fault source (A or B) needed for near-source factor determination is also identified on each map. This publication also provides information explaining the background of the maps; how they were developed and a step-by-step procedure on how to use them.

The near-source factor need only be considered in UBC Seismic Zone 4, and therefore, the maps only cover Zone 4 areas. This book is essential for building officials, civil design/construction industry working on projects in Zone 4 in California and adjacent Nevada which are subject to the 1997 UBC seismic provisions.

Prepared by the California Dept. of Conservation, Division of Mines and Geology in cooperation with the Structural Engineers Association of California's Seismology Committee. It will be necessary to use a street map in conjunction with the fault map as the fault maps do not show street names. Maps of known active fault near-source zones in California and adjacent portions of Nevada: introductory pricing $39 (Subject to change July 1, 1998). Item number MAPS 97. Order your copy today!
