1. How do I send email to the list?
To send a message to all seaint list members, use a message
with the following form (the email address is case insensitive)
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
From John Doe <johnd@bqe.com>
To seaint@seaint.org
Subject PROBLEM WITH LOADING PRODUCT
Can anybody help me unzip my file?
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
****************************************************************

2. How do I unsubscribe from the list?
To stop receiving messages from seaint you will need to send
a message to the list manager called "admin@seaint.org" with
a command to remove you from the list. The list manager controls
who belongs to the list. For example
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
From John Doe <johnd@bqe.com>
To admin@seaint.org
Subject <not needed>
leave seaint
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
If you receive a message saying you are not a member but you are still
getting messages, you could be subscribed as a different email address.
In one of the errant messages, check for the "X-ListMember" clause in
the header of the message. It will have the form
X-listMember johnd@mail.bqe.com [seaint@seaint.org]
which means that this message was from the list called "seaint"
and sent to the email address " johnd@mail.bqe.com ". You can now leave the
list by sending the message
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
From John Doe <johnd@bqe.com>
To admin@seaint.org
Subject <not needed>
leave seaint johnd@mail.bqe.com
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
***************************************************************

3. How do I request a digest. ( one email per day)?
Instead of getting each message from the list separately, you may ask
the list server to send you a compendium of all the messages that were
sent that day. To do this, send a message to the list server with the
command "DIGEST". For example
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
From John Doe <johnd@bqe.com>
To admin@seaint.org
Subject <not needed>
digest seaint
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
The list manager will send you a confirmation message back and every
24-hours you will receive a single email message with a contents
and each message listed in it.
**************************************************************

4. How do I request files via email?
This list has a set of files associated with it. These files may
contain new software releases, frequently asked questions etc. The
list server provides two commands to allow you to collect these file
DIR and GET. If you wish to obtain a list of all the files associated
with this list, send the following message to the list manager
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
From John Doe <johnd@bqe.com>
To admin@seaint.org
Subject <not needed>
dir seaint
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
In return, you will get two messages. One is a transaction
report (telling you the command was completed) and the second will be
titled "Directory for seaint" and would have a contents like
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Directory for the list seaint
1 INML301C.ZIP 2535788 bytes
2 INML302D.ZIP 2671264 bytes
3 Drilled in anchors guide lines.doc 187653 bytes
Directory for seaint has 3 entries.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Now you know the names of the files, you can request one to be sent
to you using the GET command. Taking the example of INML301C.ZIP,
we could use the command
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
From John Doe <johnd@bqe.com>
To admin@seaint.org
Subject <not needed>
get seaint inml301c.zip or
get seaint "Drilled in anchors guide lines.doc"
Notice the long file names that contain spaces have to be enclosed in quotes.
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>
Again, you will get two messages - the transaction report and a
message containing the MIME encoded file (or the file if it is a text
file).

5. Any tips to lower the traffic on the list?
1. Check the "To" box before you send your email message.
2. Use "Reply" button only when you want your reply to be distributed to
everyone on the list.
3. You can usually find the original sender of the message in the header of
your message. Try to look for it.
4. If you are offering information, please mention in your mail that all
requests to be made to you directly. Include your email address at the
bottom of your message for convenience.
5. If you rather get only one email a day, try to use the Digest feature.
You can get more help on Digest and other features by sending an email to
admin@seaint.org and in the body of the message type " help seaint ".
**************************************************************************

6. Why am I not allowed to post messages to the list server?
The list server will posts messages from subscribed members only. This
keeps the unwanted email away. If you are subscribed and you can not post
messages, there are two possibilities
CASE 1 You are able to receive messages from the list, but can not post.
In this case, the email address in your outgoing email is different than
your subscribed email address. In the headers of the email from the list,
there is a field called X-ListMember followed by an email address. That is
the address you are subscribed as. Change settings in your email program
such that your email address in the out going email matches your subscribed
email address. If that is difficult to do, then unsubscribe the old
address and subscribe the new address. You can do that by sending an
email to the admin@seaint.org and in the body of the message type
leave seaint your@oldaddress.com
join seaint
(Replace "your@oldaddress.com" with the address that is currently subscribed)
CASE 2 You are not getting any email from the list server and you can not
post any messages to the list.
In this case, all you need to do is join the list. Send email to
admin@seaint.org and in the body of the message type
join seaint
*****************************************************************************

7. How do I update my email address on the list server.
From your new email account, send an email to admin@seaint.org and in the
body of the message type
leave seaint your@oldaddress.com
join seaint
(Replace "your@oldaddress.com" with the old address that you like to remove
from the list)
***************************************************************************

8. How to get One email a day from the list server.
Send an email to admin@seaint.org and in the body of the message type
digest seaint
All the email sent to the list will be collected for you and sent to you soon
after midnight as a single email.
***************************************************************************

9. How do I switch back to the non-digest mode?
If you are currently subscribed using the "Digest" mode, simply subscribe
again to the list.
Your account will then be switched back to the normal mode.
***************************************************************************

10. Can I advertise my product/services on the list?
NO. (Don't even think about it). However, if you like, you can advertise
your product here
on our web site.

Yes. You can do that as far as the number of messages are limited. System
administrator

the system administrator has access to them.
*************************************************************************

14. Once I send an email to the list, is there a way to stop it?
Under normal conditions the email get sent at the rate of few hundred a
minute. It is very difficult to stop an email. However, you may want to
contact the administrator at
seaint-ad@seaint.org and see if he can stop it.
************************************************************************

15. Where to report problems
Should you still have any problems or questions, please email
seaint-ad@seaint.org who will be happy to help.
*************************************************************************

16. After I post a message, sometimes I receive error messages from
other servers. Why?
There may be a mail server out there that has been directed to return
all the invalid email to the "author" of the message rather than
the "Owner" of the message. This is an incorrect approach. Bounces should
always be sent to the owner (i.e. seaint-ad@seaint.org) not the author.
How other email servers on Internet are programmed remains out of our
control. All we can do is try to educate the administrator of these
servers.

The maximum length of an email sent to the list is 10 KB ( 10,240 bytes).
This includes the size of an attached files.
*************************************************************************

20. After I send an email to the list, sometimes I get bad email
notification sent to me instead of the list administrator?
Some email servers on the Internet are not configured correctly. Instead
of sending bad address bounce to the owner of the email, they send it to the
author of the email. This is very unusual. It is also out of our control.
However, if you get such email, send an email to the "root" account on that
server and request that they configure their email server such that the
bounces are sent to the owner instead of the author.
*************************************************************************

21. I would like to post a file for the list members to read. The file is
larger than 10 K limit. What should I do?
Send the file to the list administrator at seaint-ad@seaint.org
We will be glad to post it in the list download directory.
Also, see question #4 for more info.
*************************************************************************

22. When I try to unsubscribe, I get a message that I am not allowed to post?
In the header section of an email from the seaint list,
please look for a header called "X-Listmember" followed
by an email address. That is the address you are subscribed
as. Lets assume that address is "oldaddress@company.com".
Now send an email to admin@seaint.org and in the body
of the message type
leave seaint oldaddress@company.com
That should do it. seaint list server is one of the unique
educational tools for engineers all around the world. If you
do not like the amount of email you are getting, you can request that
all email be sent to you as a single email, once every day. This
feature is known as the "Digest" feature. See Question # 8 above.
*****************************************************************************

23. Can I post a joke to the list?
This list server is intended to focus on the Structural engineering issues.
Normally, the jokes are NOT welcome by members. However, an occasional joke
relating engineers are allowed, provided the content is not regarding race,
religion or ethnicity. If your email is found inappropriate by the
administrator, you will be warned and may be suspended from the list.
******************************************************************************

24. Should I unsubscribe prior to my vacation?
Yes. It is recommended that you either unsubscribe or convert your
account to the DIGEST mode. (See question # 3 & 8 for help on DIGEST)
If you plan to remain subscribed, please make sure that you turn OFF
the automatic response feature. Automatic response from your email
server/software can cause infinite loops to the List and will result in
automatic removal of your address from the List.
********************************************************************************

25. I tried to unsubscribe but I am still getting email from the list?

In the header section of an email from the SEAINT list, please look
for a header called "X-Listmember" followed by an email address.
That is the address you are subscribed as. Lets assume that address
is "oldaddress@company.com".
Now send an email to admin@seaint.org and in the body of the message type
leave seaint oldaddress@company.com
That should do it. SEAINT list server is one of the unique educational

26. Can my computer get a virus through an email sent via the list?

You can only get a virus via  email if there is a file attached to an email and you
choose to run it or open it. We strongly recommend not to click on any
attached file unless you are confident that the file is not infected. SEAINT server
runs the latest virus scan software and catches and deletes most of the virus
files. However, sometimes there may be a virus that the anti-virus software can
not detect. Under such circumstances (although rare) the attachment file will get
to the users. The user's computer does not get infected unless the user runs the
file by clicking on it. Therefore, please do NOT click on files attached to an email
unless you know what it is.
********************************************************************************
27. Why am I not getting an email or digest  from the list server anymore?

Every three months we run a cleanup utility which removes all the bad subscribed
email addresses from the list. However, if your mailbox is full or for some
reason your mail server is down at that time, the cleanup utility will treat your
address as bad and remove it from the list.

So, if you do not get an email from this list for one day, simply re-subscribe.
It does no harm if you are already subscribed.
